Have you noticed the surge of black walls and exterior house paint everywhere you go? You see it in restaurants, stores, homes and more! The color black is bold, timeless and elegant when it comes to everything, from clothing and cars, to houses and walls.

I love a black house exterior, room or accent wall. It makes such a big statement, without spending big money. Black walls can make any space impossibly chic, no matter how small or large the room is. If your space is small, just paint one wall. You can create drama with just one or two gallons of paint. It’s a very inexpensive way to create a lot of impact.

PICKING THE PERFECT BLACK PAINT

There are many shades of black to choose from, like charcoal, washed black, true black, black olive, onyx, and more. Grab a few shades from your local paint store and hang them up in the room. Having multiple paint swatches on different walls within the space will show you how the color will look at different angles and lighting. Once you've narrowed it down to 2 or 3, purchase a sample of each and paint large swatches on the walls. You will then have a better idea of how they will look in the space. When picking a paint finish, I prefer a flat finish because it is so dark. It tends to look more expensive and luxurious.

HOW TO DECORATE WITHIN A BLACK SPACE

When decorating within a black space, you can go bold with accent colors like hot pink, jewel tones, velvet fabric and brass, or you can go neutral with white, beige, heavily textured fabrics and medium wood tones. Or, if you are really bold, you can go monochromatic with black silk or velvet drapes on black walls, with gold décor accents throughout.

BLACK WALLPAPER ALTERNATIVES

Painting a room or wall black can seem daunting and like a big commitment. If you aren’t quite sure if you will like it, you can always use peel and stick black wallpaper instead to get the same effect. It is easy to remove if you change your mind down the road. It can also add a little texture into the space.
